Karen Wight Sculpture, Jewelry and Paintings
My dear Friend Karen and I were close friends in the 1980s when I lived in Santa Barbara California, her home town. She was running the family business at the time with her brother David, a home insulation company. She was recently graduated, a fine arts major, and we were both doing some modeling on the side. We met at a shoot where we modeled for a local designer. We had such a great time together that we became friends. Later when I was hurting for rent money, she was kind enough to hire me. We were two women in an office selling insulation to contractors who did not want to talk to a woman at all. So we both got busy to learn the lingo and were proud to be able to talk to these local builders and business men in such a way that they were obviously impressed. It was fun because it was a challenge.
Later i moved back to Washington State and she moved to New Mexico where she flourished as an artist for many years. Owning a gallery for a time, and later exhibiting her lovely sculpture in one of the most prestigious gallery’s in Santa Fe: Gallery 707, on Canyon Road. She is still with that gallery and several others. I encourage you to take a look at her website: Karen Wight Blessings
I have always been very impressed by her attention to the human form in her sculpture, I know she performed autopsies in University to learn about the body and gain a very complete knowledge of how the structures of the human form are put together. This is evident in her detailed masterpieces that make the metal or resin alive with fluid grace.
I am also in love with her clever jewelry that uses the human forms as decorative elements. What might appear form a distance as a necklace made of silver leaves or feathers, on close inspection are delicately detailed hands.
Although Karen has traveled and lived in many countries, she now lives in the beautiful City of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
